Wireless Systems
Wireless Internet is available throughout most of the Institute of Criminology. The primary HotSpots are indicated with WiFi signs.
HotSpots can be found in all communal areas, including the foyer, library, common rooms, meeting rooms, visitor area and all student spaces. Coverage may extend outside these areas but cannot be guaranteed.
There are 2 wireless services available:
UniOfCam
If you have a laptop that is WiFi enabled and you have a "Raven" account or have been given a UniOfCam "Ticket-ID" and password you should be able to take advantage of this service. If you are unsure whether your laptop is WiFi enabled, or have any questions about the UniOfCam wireless service, then please contact the Computer Office in room 2.10.
Further information may be found at The University's 'UniOfCam page'.
When using UniOfCam at the IoC you are connected to the Internet and your computer and the data on it may be at risk. Please make sure of the following things for your own security:
- Your operating system is up to date (i.e. all the latest updates and patches are installed).
- Your virus scanner is up to date. Students and staff of Cambridge University are entitled to a free copy of McAfee Virus Scan. More information can be found here.
- Your laptop has a secure password. More information on creating a secure password can be found on the University's passwords page
How to connect to UniOfCam at the Institute
- Search for a wireless network the way you normally would.
- When your laptop's wireless service manager finds UniOfCam, double click UniOfCam to connect.
- You will be given a warning to say the connection is insecure - click 'ok' to this.
- Once connected open a web browser (e.g. Firefox or Internet Explorer).
- If your browser's "home page" connects to the internet then you should be presented with a page that asks you to continue.
- You will then be prompted to enter your UIS account details or UniOfCam "Ticket-ID" and Password.
- Once you have logged in click "Continue". Your chosen website will now appear in a new window.
- Once you have connected to UniOfCam in this manner you may browse the internet as normal. You can also perform many of the other tasks that you are used to with a standard wired internet connection. Some tasks are restricted for security reasons; details can be found on the Computing Service's UniOfCam page.
eduroam
eduroam (education roaming) is the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community.
eduroam allows students, researchers and staff from participating institutions to obtain Internet connectivity across campus and when visiting other participating institutions around the globe by simply opening their laptop.
eduroam @ Cambridge
In order to provide a consistent service for all wireless users and to keep traffic usage levels with acceptable limits, traffic on the UniOfCam/eduroam network is monitored for excessive use. Users with high levels of traffic will be contacted and asked to moderate their usage. Measures will be taken against those who continue to have unacceptable traffic levels.
Connecting to eduroam
In order to connect to eduroam you will need an eduroam username and password. The page that opens will need you to log in with your Raven account to gain access to your details.
Once you have your eduroam token, the connection setup depends on which operating system you are running. Please see here for the Computing Services instructions on how to set up eduroam. The instructions cover most operating systems, including mobile devices such as the Blackberry and iPhone.
If you are having difficulty setting up your machine or device, please see the Computing Office in room 2.10 on the second floor, where our IT staff would be more than happy to assist.
