Biography
Paul is a doctoral student working under the supervision of Professor Barak Ariel. Paul completed an MSt degree in Applied Criminology and Police Management at the Institute of Criminology, University of Cambridge, where he earned a distinction. Paul also holds an MSc in Security Management from John Jay College of Criminal Justice at the City University of New York; and a BA in Criminology from the University of Windsor.
Paul has vast law enforcement experience policing mass transit systems in the Canadian cities of Calgary and Edmonton. This experience spurred his interest in studying public safety issues on mass transit systems and how evidence-based policing can improve safety in these settings.
Research
Paul’s research examines how the integration of offender and victim data analysis with the criminology of place could enhance police targeting at hot spots, as well as provide flexibility in the selection of suitable policing strategies. The research also includes a study of mass transit users’ perception of safety to examine the source, nature and extent of their fear of crime, as well as whether the places they are most fearful of align with the identified high crime and high harm areas.
