Biography

Will is doctoral student at the Institute of Criminology, University of Cambridge, working under the supervision of Professor Barak Ariel. Will completed an BSc degree in Astrophysics from University College London, and holds an MA in International Relations from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.

Will has extensive law enforcement experience of cybercrime, and in particular ransomware. This experience spurred his interest in studying cybercrime and ransomware, and how to best protect the public through better understanding and delivering responses to the threat.

Research

Will’s research studies how ransomware went from a niche cybercrime issue to a global national security threat. In addition, Will is exploring ransomware actor typologies, including the emergence of lone wolves, victimisation characteristics and their geographical spread, and how measurement of the ransomware threat could be improved.
