Presented by the Justice and Society Research Centre

Creating safer societies for children & young people: social harm, violence and mattering
with Dr Keir Irwin-Rodgers & Luke Billingham

In this talk, Luke Billingham and Keir Irwin-Rogers will consider
how we can make Britain a safer society to grow up in. Based on
their book, Against Youth Violence: A social harm perspective,
they will highlight the broad range of social harms that undermine
children and young people’s potential to flourish, and they will
explore some of the key drivers of these harms. Luke and Keir will
discuss the importance of paying attention to the social conditions
that predictably breed violence, consider the value of mattering as
a conceptual tool for making sense of violence, and critique some
of the harmful and limited responses to violence that exist in
contemporary Britain.
