APPLICATIONS TO VISIT THE INSTITUTE OF CRIMINOLOGY

Due to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 restrictions, and the uncertainty as to when the Institute of Criminology building will be fully functioning again (so that we will be in a position to welcome visitors safely to the building); we are not currently accepting any new applications from academics and students wishing to visit the Institute.

We very much regret this situation.

Please do stay in touch with us though, and if you wish to visit the Institute in the future you can contact Faith Payne (PA to the Director) in the Director's Office for further advice:

1 February 2021

Visiting Students

The Institute occasionally accepts Ph.D. students for short visits if an academic staff member is willing to act in a supervisory capacity for the duration of their visit. It should be emphasised that the acceptance of visiting students is rare, and is dependent upon the support of the academic host.

Application and approval process

Before making an application prospective visiting students should be in contact with their potential academic host.  If this is not the case, the prospective student should review the Institute's academic staff profiles and approach the most appropriate person.  If they are happy to host them you should supply them with:

  • A research proposal
  • Dates of proposed visit
  • A CV
  • A copy of the your Institution's Home Agreement (See note below).
  • A letter from your Home Institution course supervisor, which explains the purpose of this visit as part of your degree course studies.

A prospective visiting student's academic host will then notify the Director's Office of the application and forward the information requested above.

The application and related paperwork will be reviewed by the Director. The Director's Office will then notify the applicant whether their application has been successful or not, and if approved will begin practical preparations for their visit.

Important information

  • Prospective visiting students are not accepted unless they have an academic host within the Institute. The host will be the primary person responsible for the visiting student during their visit.
  • Prospective students with home institution agreements that will require a signature on behalf of the Institute must forward these agreements to their prospective host at the outset of the application process. If the academic staff member agrees to host, the home institution documents must be included in the papers sent to the Director's Office for review by the Director.  (Please note that the Institute will issue visiting students with a Visitor Agreement letter as well).
  • Working space is very limited and the majority of our visiting students are accommodated within the Radzinowicz Library. The library is closed during August each year, and visitors are usually able to have limited access at this time. If the academic host is able to offer desk space from within their space allocation the Director's Office will be informed, as this factor will be considered during the approval process.
  • The Institute does not provide funding for visiting students.
