Event 100 Years of the Howard Journal

Live Screening Event: 100 years of the Howard Journal Lessons for contemporary penal policy ~ hosted by Institute of Criminology Director, Loraine Gelsthorpe

The Howard Journal of Crime and Justice is 100 years old this year, having first been published in October 1921. To mark the occasion, they have commissioned a special centennial issue, guest edited by Professor Clare Anderson, Professor Steve King and Jess Kebbell.

At this launch event panellists will be asked to consider how their paper in the centennial issue speaks to current challenges in penal policy and reform.


Speakers will include:

• Ian Loader, Professor, University of Oxford and Editor-in-Chief, Howard Journal of Crime and Justice

• Clare Anderson, Professor, University of Leicester

• Madhurima Dhanuka, Programme Head, Prison Reforms Programme, Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, New Delhi

• Jon Collins, CEO Prisoners’ Education Trust

• Helen Johnston, Professor, University of Hull

• Ashley Rubin, Assistant Professor, University of Hawai’i

• Heather Shore, Professor, Manchester Metropolitan University

• Richard Sparks, Professor, University of Edinburgh


The screening of the discussion is an in person event which will be live screened as well.  Refreshments will be available for attendees, tickets limited to 40. (Measures are in place in line with University Covid Guidelines: Masks are encouraged and hand sanitiser is available at all stations.)
